'Mad Dogs' and Specialists: Aisha Buhari vs Ayo Fayose

When the news broke out that the anti-graft agency, EFCC moved to freeze Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose's account for alleged movement of illegal N4.7 bn Arms Funds, the news was greeted with mixed reactions. It is a known fact that Fayose is most popular for his anti-FG remarks and doggednes. The Governor hit back at the presidency by reminding the nation of the first lady, Aisha Buhari's alleged role in the William Jefferson's bribery scandal. Links on the U.S Department of justice website were circulated on the internet. The link contained court documents that imaged the alleged involvement of the first lady in the bribery scandal. It was alleged that Mrs Buhari sent illegal funds to the convicted ex-American congressman, William Jefferson. A sum of $170,000 was said to be transferred from an account opened in Nigeria with one Aisha Buhari as its owner to an account named the ANJ Group, LLC which pointed to William Jefferson as its recipient. Meanwhile, the presidency had dismissed as laughable the desperate attempt by Fayose to link Aisha to the bribery scandal for which Jefferson was convicted in 2009.
However, the last has not been heard of  the issue as Aisha Buhari called out Fayose on Twitter on Tuesday night calling the latter a 'mad dog'. It was a trending issue on Nigerian Twitter and it sparked series of reactions. While many poked fun at both parties, some didn't take the tweets lightly. An average Nigerian knows how Nigerian Twitter can be so mean and ruthless (Ask Osi Suave and Lai Mohammed). Memes were created and all. At this point, I don't think Aisha Buhari's supposed aim was achieved. If one is looking for Nigerians' sympathies, Twitter isn't an option at all. If she feels truly distressed, she should seek redress in the court of law. Aisha Buhari should sue Ayo Fayose for defamation if she feels she has been falsely accused. As the first lady of a moral-conscious country like Nigeria, using derogatory remarks isn't just right. There are many Nigerian youths who look up to her as a mother and mentor. She has only revealed she's a woman who can never exercise the restraint a man can. She should listen to those telling her not to go through this ignoble path of calling the 'mad dog' out on social media. Suing Fayose and his spokesperson for defamation would deter other 'mad dogs' from doing the same thing. However, there is a clause; She can only sue Fayose is she clears her name in the alleged matter. James Eyre said, "A man must come into a court of equity with clean hands". If Aisha sues Fayose and she's found guilty of the allegations ,then there is no case whatsoever against Ayo Fayose. I rest my case.

Will Conte's 3-5-2 formation work in Chelsea?

Antonio Conte is the man that has been appointed to take over the permanent managerial seat at Chelsea after the sack of Jose Mourinho in December. He signed a 3-year deal and would begin is work after EURO 2016. Conte is a man who is famous for employing the 3-5-2 formation This formation features 3 central defenders, 2 wing backs on the wing, 3 central midfielders and 2 forwards. Conte won 3 successive scudetto titles in Juventus from 2012 employing the formation.
This formation has been employed by different managers in the EPL at different times and there have been mixed results. Brendan Rogers employed the formation in Liverpool during the 2013-2014 season. It was partially successful as they were on a 11-match winning streak. Louis Van Gaal employed the same formation in 2014-2015 season. He used Di Maria (LMAO) as a wing-back. This formation achieved underwhelming performances. Paul Lambert employed the formation in Aston villa from 2012-2015 and this was a horror show. They suffered the heaviest defeat in the hands of Chelsea 8-0) during this period.
There are pros and cons of this formation. When in attack, the defensive midfielder moves behind the strikers to provide support and distribute passes. The full backs temporarily become wing backs to provide passing options. When the other team is with the ball, the formation is switched to 4-4-2 formation. In case of a counter, they won't be able to switch to a defensive formation. Worse still, if the opposing team employs a single forward formation or a false nine, the 3 centre backs would have to man mark a single forward. They have to be relentless and work as a unit.
Right now, Chelsea's defensive unit won't be able to provide strong options for the formation. John Terry and Ivanovic are aging, Cahill and Zouma may be good options but their underwhelming performances last season may cast little doubts over their abilities. Azpilicueta seems to be declining over the years. Even in midfield, Magic has proved to be the commanding DM he was two years ago. Cesc Fabregas seems to have rejuvenated his form. Asides Fabregas, there are no natural options for the central midfield role. There's only one 1st team striker available. With all these, Conte might want to reconsider unless he makes new signings that would fit his formation. His vast experience as a player and manager would attract top players to Chelsea. The only impediment is Chelsea missing out on European football. All the same, let's see what Conte has to offer with his famous formation.

COMMERCIAL BUS CRUSHES INFANT TO DEATH IN BENUE OVER N150 CHANGE

The deceased infant
Pandemonium broke in Makurdi, Benue State capital recently when a commercial bus crushed to death an infant baby over N150 change, injuring the nursing mother in the process.

The luciferious incident, happened along Makurdi-Gboko expressway happened Wednesday at about 9p.m.

The father of the deceased baby who simply gave his name as Senator Anuum narrated that the mother of child had boarded the vehicle, alongside her baby, from the second gate of the Benue State University (BSU) to Coca-Cola junction located along the highway.

Anuum explained that when the mother of the child was about to alight from the vehicle at the junction, she gave the bus conductor N200 and she was supposed to be given a balance of N150 which, the conductor refused.

“The mother and her child, who she carried at her back, were the remaining passengers in the bus. The conductor did not want to give her the change and they drove off, in the process she grabbed the conductor that was already on the moving vehicle, with her baby at the back and she lost balance, fell down and was dragged on the road till the baby fell off from her back, in between the back wheels and was smashed, died instantly and the driver and the conductor drove off,” Anuum said.

It was further gathered that the barbaric act drew the attention of residents and passers-by who thronged to the place to catch a glimpse and rescue the wailing woman. It said the matter has been reported to security agencies.

Efforts to contact the police public relations officer, ASP Moses Yamu failed but a police source said the matter was being investigated to fish out the perpetrators.

NSDC DISCOVERS "SPIRITUAL" BOOK USED BY BOKO HARAM FOR INDOCTRINATION

A Nigerian official said on Sunday that his agency had discovered a “spiritual book” suspected to be used by the Boko Haram to indoctrinate their victims.

The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, in Borno, Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed this in Maiduguri in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

Mr. Abdullahi said that the book, written in Arabic, was discovered during an operation by the corps officials at an abandoned house in Dikwa Local Government Area of the state.

“It is sad that many innocent souls had been dragged into submitting to Boko Haram through spiritual indoctrination,” he said.

“The book, named ‘Guduma’, was used by the insurgents as a powerful charm to indoctrinate followers into submitting to the dictates of leaders of the sect.

“Our findings revealed that the book was also used in deceiving victims and members of the sect into believing that it could make them invisible and also offer protection against bullet shots and bombs.
“The spiritual book was abandoned by ‘Boko Haram’ after the takeover of Dikwa from the insurgents, two years ago,” he said.

Nigerian troops have retaken several territory initially captured by the terrorists whose activities have caused the death of over 20,000 people since 2009.

MEET THE WITHCES ASSOCIATION OF GHANA

The decision by some alleged witches in the Gushegu District in the Northern Region to demand their right has paid off as they would begin to receive their allowances under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty programme (LEAP) by the end of this month. The alleged witches were registered for the LEAP programme two years ago but have not been paid any allowance since.

Protest
A protest march by the 163 to the Gushegu District Assembly last Monday was to demand their share of the LEAP allowance “‘We registered these alleged witches about two years ago but they are yet to receive their allowances and when they came here to demand the payment of their allowances I called Accra and I was told their registration forms are being processed and they would start paying them their allowances by the end of this month (June), the Gushegu District Social Welfare Officer, Mr Tia S. Dokurugu told The Mirror in an interview. The alleged witches, who have been ostracised from their communities, are being camped at the three witches’ camps in the Gushegu districts namely the Leli-tabari, Kpatinga and Nabuli witches camps. Their action at the District Assembly last Monday, earned them their right and those in charge had no alternative than to act to meet their demand. The spokesperson for the women, Alimatu Sadia said life had become difficult for them since they were chased out of their communities based on the accusation of witchcraft and the only way they could get the government to listen to them was to march to the district assembly to demand their share as beneficiaries of the LEAP programme. The action Mr Dokurugu told The Mirror that the action of the 168 alleged witches was necessitated by the payment of allowances to 31 inmates of the Leli-tabari witches camp through the Bidizaa Rural Bank. He said the 31 inmates of the Leli-tabari witches’ camp, were registered in 2009 and they had been receiving their allowances but the 168 persons who marched to the assembly to demand theirs were registered two years ago and their forms were being processed in Accrato enable them to benefit.“They accused me of spending their money but I told them that I have sent their registration forms to Accra for them to be processed and I have been assured by the ministry that by the end of this month they would begin to receive their allowances.Mr Dokurugu said the allowances paid under the LEAP programme varies with the lowest being GH¢67 and the highest GH¢106.

The LEAP programme
The LEAP programme is a social cash transfer programme that provides cash and health insurance to the extremely poor households across the country. The main aim is to alleviate short-term poverty and encourage long-term human capital development. It was launched in 2008 as Ghana’s flagship programme of the National Social Protection Strategy and it is being implemented by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

Abolishing of witches camp
The Ministry of Gender and its partners in 2014 launched a project to abolish witches camps in the Northern Region but two years after the initiation of the project, the ministry has been able to close down only one out of the six witch camps in the Northern Region at Bonyase in the Central Gonja District. Currently, there are five witch camps in the Northern Region with the Gambaga witches camp in the West Mamprusi District being the oldest, which is believed to have been in existence for about a century.

MOSES COMES BACK TO SPLIT THE OGUN RIVER

The Kara cattle market community under the bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway has become a Mecca of some sort with residents of the community and passers-by trooping to see the dried section of the river which once provided water for the Kara cattle and ram market.

Traffic in bound Lagos slowed down and Road Safety officials tried to make light the gridlock.

Before the unusual incident, the water body once served as means of transportation for canoe owners but residents say they woke up to see the channel blocked on Saturday morning.

There were initial suspicion that this could be water hyacinth but the surface of what used to be the flowing river hard become a firm ground.

Some people were seen testing the solidity of the green that has taken over the waterway by walking across the river and some found it a ready made recreation ground.

Surprisingly, on the other side of the Kara Bridge, the river is seen flowing freely.

Environmentalists have, however, warned that residents keep off the blocked channel for the risks of it opening up unexpectedly and advised relevant authorities find a means of clearing the plants.

ALL HAIL KING TOMATO!!!!!!!

For months now, tomatoes have largely disappeared from the market, the few that are avialable are sold for inconceivable prices.
Musa who sells suya ,somewhere in Lagos, insisted that slices of tomato on any purchase of suya attracted an additional #200..{haba}.  For him, even though satisfying his customers remained a priority, that would have to come at a very high cost.
He further went on to say: "I get cucumber, cabbage and onions for my customers.Anyone wey want tomato go pay for am. E too cost for market"

Lately, the country has been hit by what could aptly be described as the worst tomato scarcity ever. Nigerians are yet to understand why such an important item has suddenly been priced out of their reach.

Manhy Nigerians have have rained curses on the present governmet administratiuon for this scarcity but alas this crisis is beyond that.

FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TOMATO CRISIS

The tomato crisis is coming on the heels of a recent excrutiating fuel scarcity , fuel price hike and a general rise in commodity prices due to inflation.  Initially fears were first based on speculations that the sudden scarcity of tomato was caused by the establishment of tomato processing plants. It was speculated that owners of the plant mopped up the available stock in the market. Many factors have been cited responsible for this scarcity such as the recent fuel scarcity , unrest and insecurity in the north east, inadequate haverst and the planned relocation of the popular mile 12 market in Lagos.

The dominant factor in this crisis is "TUTA ABSOLUTA" or what is known as the Tomato Ebola .
A moth known as the Tomato Leaf Absoluta is the real culprit behind this scarcity. The pest which is likened to termites devouring wood were said to have first appeared in early march and has devastated tomato plantations in Jigawa, Bauchi, Sokoto, Taraba, Katsina and even Kano which is a major state in commercial cultivation.
The invasion of these pests prompted the governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, to declare a "tomato state of emergency".
80% of the tomato farms have been ravaged by the pest, adding that over 200 tomato farmers in three out nof 12 tomato-producing Local governments areas of the state were affected by the plague which has cost them about #1 billion.

So dear Nigerians, please for the "tenure" of this crisis please lets resort to tomato-less meals .. These alternatives include vegetable stew or soup, carrot stew, chicken sauce, or better still enjoy a bowl of cassava flakes with groundnut..

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

1966

The Miranda rights are established

On this day in 1966, the Supreme Court hands down its decision in Miranda v. Arizona, establishing the principle that all criminal suspects must be advised of their rights before interrogation. Now considered standard police procedure, “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can, and will, be used against you in court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you,” has been heard so many times in television and film dramas that it has become almost cliche.

The roots of the Miranda decision go back to March 2, 1963, when an 18-year-old Phoenix woman told police that she had been abducted, driven to the desert and raped. Detectives questioning her story gave her a polygraph test, but the results were inconclusive.
However, tracking the license plate number of a car that resembled that of her attacker’s brought police to Ernesto Miranda, who had a prior record as a peeping tom. Although the victim did not identify Miranda in a line-up, he was brought into police custody and interrogated.
What happened next is disputed, but officers left the interrogation with a confession that Miranda later recanted, unaware that he didn’t have to say anything at all.
The confession was extremely brief and differed in certain respects from the victim’s account of the crime. However, Miranda’s appointed defense attorney (who was paid a grand total of $100) didn’t call any witnesses at the ensuing trial, and Miranda was convicted. While Miranda was in Arizona state prison, the American Civil Liberties Union took up his appeal, claiming that the confession was false and coerced.

The Supreme Court overturned his conviction, but Miranda was retried and convicted in October 1966 anyway, despite the relative lack of evidence against him. Remaining in prison until 1972, Ernesto Miranda was later stabbed to death in the men’s room of a bar after a poker game in January 1976.
As a result of the case against Miranda, each and every person must now be informed of his or her rights when arrested.

EURO 2016; ENGLAND AND RUSSIA GIVEN DISQUALIFICATION WARNING

Uefa has threatened to disqualify England and Russia from Euro 2016 if there is any further violence by fans.
It has begun disciplinary proceedings against Russia - but not England - after "totally unacceptable" scenes at Saturday's England-Russia game.

Charges against Russia are for crowd disturbances, racist behaviour, and setting off fireworks, Uefa confirmed.
There were issues with segregation of fans, the body admitted, promising security would be "strengthened".

The UK government said it had offered to send extra British police to France ahead of England's next match in Lens on Thursday.
Witnesses said trouble began in the stadium after flares were let off by Russian fans near the end of the game. Some then climbed across barriers designed to keep rival fans apart.

A number of Russia supporters appeared to kick and punch fleeing England fans, who were forced to clamber over fencing to escape.
Earlier in the day, England, Russia and local fans were embroiled in ugly clashes with riot police, with a number of bloodied fans being taken to hospital.

'Utter disgust'

In a strongly-worded statement, European football's governing body said it would not hesitate to impose sanctions on either Russia or England should such violence occur again.
Measures included the potential disqualification of their respective teams from the tournament, it said.

Earlier Russia's sports minister Vitaly Mutko said Uefa had "done the right thing" to start a disciplinary case against the Russian Football Union, R-Sport news agency reported.

"There were flares, there was a flare gun, there had been clashes in the stands, it's necessary to sort all of this out," he reportedly said.
"The fans were rooting greatly, but there are people who do not come for the football."
Also on Sunday, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said alcohol restrictions near "sensitive" venues would be extended, with sales bans on match days and the eve of match days.

'Slack' security

England spectators who were at the match have described a "desperate scramble" to escape charging Russia fans, some of who were wearing gum shields and MMA (mixed martial arts) gloves, one witness claimed.

Cory McLeod, who was in the stadium said: "A wall of Russian fans charged at our section, which had kids, women, and even some Russian fans in.

"I couldn't see if any of them had weapons or anything but people were running fast, it was manic, just a desperate scramble towards a large fence in the corner."
